KaLani Curtis, Alpine School District (March 2010) |
by Travis Lemon

KaLani Curtis has taught mathematics for 15 years. She is currently teaching at Canyon View Junior High in Orem, Utah. She describes her classroom as inviting and structured, “I like to have procedures that are followed daily so that students know what is expected each day. I love to question students and find out what they are thinking. I have great wait time and students know I won't just give them the answers. I expect great things from my students and won't let them give less than their best. I try to inspire them to be a better person as well as a better mathematician.”
Kalani provides both lessons of mathematics and lessons of life in her classroom. She enjoys teaching most when a student tells her that they finally get it, or when they finally take ownership of their own learning. It is the students that keep her going. “I know that I am making a difference in someone's life. It's those students who come back to visit or send you a letter and tell you thank you.”
When asked what advice she would give others Kalani said, “Hang in there! I use this phrase daily. Just hang in there until they get it. Adjust if you need to. It's okay to change your schedule if they need more time. I've learned this through the years. To refocus and adjust if needed. I'm the teacher and I make the rules. And it is okay to smile – sometimes. I also believe that as teachers we should be the best students. I try to go to as many district and state classes as possible to better my teaching.” |
