by Diana Suddreth The Utah State Board of Education gave preliminary acceptance to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Language Arts and Mathematics at their June meeting. It is anticipated that they will fully adopt the standards at their August meeting. The CCSS contain a consistent, clear understanding for what students are expected to learn for college and career readiness. They define grade-level curriculum K-8 and a body of standards for high school. The work of developing the standards was led by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association (NGA) with considerable input from states, professional organizations, and teachers. The Utah State Office of Education has begun work on a strategic plan that will aid in implementation over the next few years. In 2010-2011 no official change to the current core will take place and CRT assessments will continue to be based on the operational 2007 Mathematics Core. More information regarding the implementation of CCSS will be available in the coming months.
